How to Create the Perfect Home Office

When working from home or away from the office, it can be difficult to be productive. It’s important to set up your working environment so you can remain focused and achieve your goals. Here are some tips for creating the perfect home office.

Colour, Colour, Colour

You might not think that colour is important. However, the colours around us have a big impact on our attitude, concentration and mood. We all respond differently to different environments; for those of us that respond best to a bright and cheery atmosphere, orange or lime green palettes are your friends, but for those that like calm and collect, blues and light greens might help you to focus better. Just be aware that negative colours, like black and red, can take away your motivation.

Lighting

The right lighting is important for any environment. A good lighting configuration can help to avoid eyestrain, migraines and headaches. Avoid positioning your monitor or laptop too near a window and away from any overhead glare. For smaller tasks, such as reading, a desk lamp can be useful. In environments that get varying amounts of natural light throughout the day, dimmer switches can help to get the lighting just right. Don’t forget to do your bit for the environment and use LED or energy-saving light bulbs.

Office Supplies and Equipment

It’s essential that every office, whether it’s at home or at your workplace, has the right equipment. A good supply of stationery, paper and suitable laptop or desktop computer are fundamental to productivity. Check your companies policy for signing out stationery equipment and make sure that you have all the office supplies necessary to get your work done. Don’t forget to use recycled paper and eco-friendly office supplies to reduce your impact on the environment.

A Tidy Environment is a Happy Environment

Stick to the essential accessories and furniture. Anything else, whether its pieces of art on the walls or novelty desk toys, can serve as a distraction. Obviously, you need to feel comfortable in your office, so having some items that help create the right atmosphere is fine, just don’t overdo it.

Inspiration

Your home office is a sanctuary for positivity and creativity, so include something that inspires you. A photograph of your family, inspirational quotes, images of beautiful landscapes, can all promote positivity and inspire you when you lose your focus.
