Waitrose Trials Bring Your Own Container Scheme

Waitrose supermarket chain plans to start selling items such as cereals, pasta, coffee and rice in large dispensers in an effort to reduce single-use plastic. Even cleaning products and alcohol are expected to be part of the scheme allowing customers to fill up their own reusable containers.

Items purchased through this pick-and-mix style system will be around fifteen per cent cheaper compared to packaged items to encourage customers to make the most of the eco-friendly initiative.

The trial is scheduled to run for 11 weeks ending on the 18th August in the Botley Road store in Oxford. If the scheme is a success, then it will be rolled out to other stores across the UK.

Waitrose is committed to reducing the amount of plastic packaging they use for their products. We can only hope that this encourages more big chains to get on board and do their bit.

Not Just Waitrose

It’s not just Waitrose that are doing their bit.

Boston Tea Party

In an earlier post, we talked about how Boston Tea Party is planning to stop accepting products packaged in single-use plastic from their suppliers by 2020, starting with milk.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s plans to remove all plastic for its loose fruit, vegetables and bakery items by 2020, encouraging customers to bring their own bags or buy a reusable bag made from recycled materials.

Adidas

A while back, Adidas teamed up with Parley for the Oceans to design a trainer made with yarn from recycled ocean plastics and aims to be using 100% recycled polyester by 2024.

Pilot

Pilot have recently developed the Bottle to Pen (B2P) line of pens, the world’s first line of pens made from recycled plastic water bottles. The refillable gel ink pen provides a smooth and comfortable writing experience, while its unique design, that reflects that of a water bottle, makes a clear statement to others that you are committed to using recycled products.

We can only hope that other corporations get on board and do what they can to tackle the production of single-use plastic.

Remember, you can do your bit, not just at home, but in your offices too. Buying recycled, green office supplies such as pens, toner and paper all help to reduce your impact on the environment.
