Global Office Supplies Support The Ocean Cleanup
Global Office Supplies are now regular supporters of The Ocean Cleanup – the largest ocean cleanup in history.
Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean. A significant amount of this plastic drifts into large systems of circulating ocean currents and breaks down into microplastics which are easily mistaken for food by sea life.
The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organisation that is developing advanced technologies to rid the ocean of plastic and, with support from donors like Global Office Supplies, aim to clean up half the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in just five years’ time.
How do they plan to do it?
The Ocean Cleanup is developing a passive system that consists of a 600-metre long, u-shaped float that sits on the surface of the water and a 3-metre deep skirt. The system will move through the currents, in the same way that plastic does, and collect all the discarded plastic.
By deploying a fleet of these systems into the ocean, The Ocean Cleanup estimates that they will be able to remove up to 50% of the Great Pacific Garbage patch in just 5 years.
What will happen to the plastic they collect?
Once the plastic is collected it will be brought to shore for recycling and sold to B2C companies. The revenue this produces will be reinvested to help fund further ocean cleanups.
We are all responsible for the plastic in the ocean and positive action needs to be taken against it. While The Ocean Cleanup is working hard to make a positive impact they can’t do it alone and need support from their partners.
