Boston Tea Party Plan to Stop All Single-Use Plastic from 2020

We don’t need to tell you that single-use plastic is bad for the environment. It’s been a hot topic for quite some time now and quite frankly, there are some shocking stats about the amount of single-use plastic that ends up in our oceans and seas.

We all need to do our bit to reduce the amount of single-use plastic we use in our day-to-day lives and make sure that we don’t cause any more damage to the environment.

Boston Tea Party

Boston Tea Party, a family owned independent small cafe chain, recently announced that they plan to stop accepting all single-use plastics from their suppliers by 2020. This comes after their decision to ban the use of single-use cups last summer – a commitment which saw the company’s sales fall by £250,000. Despite this loss in revenue, Boston Tea Party is still committed to reducing its impact on the environment and is in discussions with suppliers about how they can completely avoid single-use plastic.

It Won’t Be Easy

Boston Tea Party admits that this won’t be an easy task but are supported by many of their suppliers who have a similar attitude towards single-use plastic and are keen to help Boston Tea Party solve this problem. However, despite the support they have from their suppliers, it will not be an easy feat and will take a lot of hard work, innovation and a lot of money, which just goes to show they are devoted to such a worthy cause.

The first stage in the plan is to stop using plastic milk bottles and replace them with 13-litre reusable milk containers known as pergals. The cafe chain currently used in excess of 190,000 milk bottles per year and, although they have a strict recycling policy, they are concerned about where their waste plastic ends up.

Inspiring Others

Not only are Boston Tea Party playing their part to reduce the amount of single-use plastic that is used but they are inspiring others to do the same. They continue to run open days where they invite their competitors to ask questions about how they too can reduce their plastic use and educate and encourage others to get on board.

You Can Help Too

You too can do your part to reduce the amount of plastic used in your homes and businesses. Use reusable containers, buy products made from recycled materials, ensure that you recycle properly – there are countless practices that we can all put in place to help reduce the amount of plastic that ends in our oceans.
