To help fight the war on plastic and encourage others to invest in plastic technology, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has launched two new competitions to help develop plastics that are greener, safer and more easily recyclable.
The plastic crisis has been a hot topic for quite some time now. There is no getting away from the damage that is being caused every day by the waste plastic that litters our oceans and beaches.
Plastic has played an important role in helping us to create revolutionary goods such as mobile phones and microwaves. However, plastic waste is harmful to the environment and is a growing environmental concern and something needs to be done to stem the very real problem of plastic pollution.
To help encourage a solution to the plastic problem, UKRI has launched a competition that will provide up to £8m of funding to help researchers develop recycling systems that can cope with the rising volumes of plastic waste. The investment comes as part of the government’s commitment to transform the package production industry.
Plastic pollution has reached a critical point and we must do something to save the planet. The UKRI competitions will hopefully help further the development of greener plastics that are safe, clean and recyclable. This could really revolutionise plastic packaging and production and pave the way to a more sustainable future.
If the production of greener, safer and more recyclable plastic can be achieved not only will the environment benefit, but it will boost productivity and prevent disruption to businesses and consumers. This will accelerate the end of traditional plastics and the dream of a plastic-free environment could be realised much sooner.
Industrial and academic cooperation is essential to the process of bringing these new ideas to the market. Researchers and scientists all over the world are looking for alternatives to plastic, new ways of reusing existing plastic and new methods of recycling plastic.
However, everyone has a duty to be responsible with their plastic use. “Reduce, reuse and recycle” is becoming the mantra for many environmentalists and is something we should all be mindful of in our everyday lives; at home, in the office and on the move.
Stop plastic going to our seas!
